Chimney Rain Cap

Anyone that has a fireplace in good working condition should have a chimney rain cap. And if they do not, they should have them installed as soon as possible. Most chimneys need the caps to keep the rain, snow and birds out of the chimney. Without the rain cap there is nowhere for the rain to go other than inside the fireplace wall and that will surely ruin the fireplace, the walls and make a big mess.

Birds are another hazard for fireplaces. If one does not have a chimney rain cap they will get in there and make there nests. They like the warmth coming from the fireplace and will cause a lot of damage. Small animals such as squirrels can get up in there and hide their nuts for winter storage.

A lot of fireplaces are made of metal, with two or three layers of metal that let the air flow up and out of the fireplace. Without a chimney rain caps, the rain will seep down in between these layers and can cause rust and other problems. With metal chimneys, they come with rain caps made by the manufacturer of the chimney. But sometimes they wear out and need to be replaced.

If you do not have any draft problems but just need to replace the chimney rain cap, try if you can and get the original manufacture and see if they can supply you with a new one. If not, as some are no longer in business, you might get by with another brand that is close to the one you have.

A copper chimney rain cap is ideal for your fireplace, just because they are so pretty and will add charm to any fireplace. Through the years a copper chimney rain cap develops a patina that is beautiful. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are brick, stone, and metal. But copper is popular and is just as good as the rest. Some say a copper chimney rain cap lasts longer than others and do come in different designs. Some are treated but some are left to their original color and they will weather, almost looking green in some cases.

To install a chimney rain cap is not too difficult to do. You have to first figure out what kind of chimney flue is on your fireplace and then get the size of the rain cap. There are just a few screws or fasteners and almost anyone that can use a screw driver can install it. Some will hire a professional to do the job, but it is really a simple installation. Some people are afraid of heights or just don’t want to bother with it.

Depending on the size of the chimney rain cap you will need, they come in different shapes, styles and prices. Copper being the most expensive, but will last longer than others and will not rust. Stainless steel usually will not rust either. Any hardware store or a fireplace store can help you with the one you want.
